I’m Reuben and I am 16 years old. After I left secondary school I knew what I wanted to do as job. I wanted to join the military. I went to a military preparation course and was well on my way to joining the Royal Marines. However, when I got to the point of interviews I realised that it wasn’t for me. I had lost my purpose and needed to find it again desperately. My mum told me about a volunteering opportunity at a local charity, Community Solutions. They were looking for help in the café. I was hesitant at first but I was made to feel really welcome and after a few days of volunteering I felt at home!
I had volunteered for around four months when I decided to try out a course called the Traineeship at Blackburn college. Through their help I learnt new things about how to make myself look attractive to employers and I learnt new things about myself too. As part of this traineeship I had to undergo 6 weeks of work placement and as soon as I realised that I had a choice of where I could go I instantly thought of Community Solutions.
The placement consisted of helping design leaflets, flyers and social media posts. It also included working in the café and taking part in groups such as the photography group. I enjoyed every second of it and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a placement or is interested in volunteering. Community Solutions is brilliant place to work, doing amazing things for the people of Lancashire.
