1.1 Befriending Mentor

Volunteer Befriending Mentors provide short and medium-term support in the community. They help to reduce social isolation and support individuals in times of emotional crisis and life transitions, such as bereavement, relationship breakdown, birth of a child, retirement, health diagnosis, loss of employment and family break-down. Mentoring individuals, often experiencing complex issues, to enable them to achieve specific goals and aspirations, the role encourages personal development, builds confidence and helps to improve health and well-being. Providing friendly, practical support, volunteers promote inter-dependence, through home visits, assisting with shopping, engaging in social settings and accompanying to appointments. Volunteers support individuals to improve their quality of life and reduce social isolation, by developing new skills. This service is delivered on a one-to-one basis. Full training and ongoing support will be provided to all volunteers.

Volunteer Requirements

  • Commit to visiting a person weekly or fortnightly.
  • Willingness to travel if applicable.
  • Involvement in groups and/or activities.
  • Friendly and open minded.
  • Creative and innovative.
  • Flexible and reliable.
  • Non-judgemental.
  • Approachable and empathetic.
  • Have excellent listening skills.
  • Undertake a DBS check.
  • Work within the policies and procedures of Community Solutions North West.
  • Undertake supervision and attend regular team events and training.
  • Report any needs or concerns to a Community Solutions North West coordinator and refer to other agencies where appropriate.

Catering Volunteer

Catering Volunteers assist with food preparation, serving customers and general cleaning and maintenance of the tea room and kitchen areas at Elmfield Hall. Volunteers will ensure that health and safety procedures are adhered to. Ideally, they will possess Level 2 Food Hygiene and have previous cafe or catering experience. If not training will be provided.

Reception & Hospitality Volunteer

Reception volunteers are required to provide a friendly, welcoming environment for people visiting Elmfield Hall. Duties include general office administration, reception cover, answering the telephone and assisting with hospitality for meetings, events, training sessions and group activities. Volunteers will be involved in data input tasks and will ideally have knowledge of computer packages such as Word and Excel (not essential).

Marketing and Promotions Volunteer

Marketing and Promotions Volunteers will assist with the promotion of our organisation, using a variety of social media tools and applications. They will work with the marketing team to investigate opportunities, attend events and assist with the development of our marketing portfolio (digital and print). Alongside general administration duties, they will assist with the upkeep of our website and data input. A knowledge of digital media including social networking is beneficial.

Cooking and Horticulture Group Mentor

Cooking and Horticulture Group Mentors assist with the planning and delivery of small group cooking and/or horticulture activities. Assisting attendees with their integration into the group environment, they will inspire attendees to cook cost effective meals using healthy ingredients. Providing friendly support, they will encourage personal development by building confidence and self-esteem. Volunteers should have a general awareness of kitchen hygiene and food handling and ideally possess Level 2 Food Hygiene (not essential as training will be provided).

Digital Pioneer Volunteer

Digital Pioneer Volunteers assist with the planning and delivery of small group and/or 1:1 sessions for individuals, who would like to know more about accessing and using digital technology. Primarily aimed at older people, volunteers will support participants to access social media, use websites, manage online accounts and appointments, access mobile apps and use their own technology, such as mobile phones, laptops or tablets. Volunteers will provide friendly support and will encourage personal development by building confidence and self-esteem.
